matías delgado's free-kick with eight minutes to play earned fc basel 1893 a point in their opening uefa cup group a match against fc schalke 04.
kobiashvili opener levan kobiashvili had put schalke ahead with a stunning strike on eight minutes, but the uefa intertoto cup winners were denied victory by an equally impressive effort from delgado, the substitute curling his shot over the wall and beyond a stranded frank rost in the home goal.
injury problems both sides came into the match with injury problems. schalke coach ralf rangnick was without midfield player jörg böhme and defender fabian lamotte, while defender murat yakin missed out for basel.
