linfield fc and b36 tórshavn will start from scratch in the faroe islands next week after playing out a goalless draw in belfast in the first leg of their uefa champions league first qualifying round tie.
linfield, northern irish champions for a seventh time in nine years last season, were left to rue missed chances after having the better of a tight game, but could not find a way past b36's impressive keeper meinhardt joensen.
the faroe islands no1 made a good save from a powerful daryl fordyce effort on 19 minutes, but he excelled himself six minutes before the break. linfield captain jamie mulgrew was fouled by jonas rasmussen in the penalty area, but joensen superbly kept out peter thompson's spot kick. several good opportunities came and went for the hosts, and for mark mcallister in particular, who was guilty of not turning in robert garrett's header across goal from just metres out.
tórshavn almost made linfield pay for their profligacy when lukasz cieslewicz hit the post from a rare raid forward late on. the score remained goalless, however, and the second leg will take place in torshavn next tuesday.
