psv eindhoven overturned a one-goal first-leg deficit to cruise into the group stage of the uefa champions league with an emphatic 5-0 victory at home against ten-man fk crvena zvezda.
emphatic win trailing 3-2 after their visit to belgrade a fortnight ago, the eredivisie side produced a stylish display in eindhoven with first-half goals from mark van bommel and damarcus beasley turning the tie in psv's favour before van bommel again, john de jong and jan vennegoor of hesselink all found the net after the break.
perfect start guus hiddink's side made the perfect start, taking the lead in the ninth minute. ji-sung park cleverly escaped a challenge from aleksandar lukovic on the edge of the area only to be brought down by the defender as he closed in on goal. captain van bommel duly levelled the tie from the penalty spot.
dudic denied the strike gave psv the advantage on away goals, although the visitors threatened to restore their overall advantage a minute before the half-hour as lukovic's corner picked out milan dudic only for the defender to put his diving header over the bar.
beasley involvement seconds later the guests were down to ten men as psv broke quickly and beasley was brought down by milan bisevac on the edge of the area, earning the crvena zvezda defender an automatic red card. three minutes later psv made the advantage count, beasley tapping into an empty net after park cleverly squared the ball for him.
two for van bommel psv continued to dictate the run of play after the break and always look likely to add to their tally. it was van bommel who scored the third, the midfield player collecting andre ooijer's perfectly-weighted pass and shooting beyond goalkeeper vladimir disljenkovic.
de jong delight with the home side in complete control, their place in thursday’s draw was all but assured a minute later as beasley flicked on young-pyo lee's centre and de jong scored psv's fourth of the night.
late fifth psv had a number of chances to increase their lead yet further as the match wore on, but had to wait until ten minutes from the end for their final goal. again lee was the source, crossing for vennegoor of hesselink to flick a header beyond disljenkovic and put the seal on a wonderful display by the home side.
