roy makaay scored the fastest-ever goal in the uefa champions league as fc bayern münchen overturned real madrid cf's 3-2 first-leg advantage with a fine 2-1 victory at the fußball arena münchen to book a place in the quarter-finals.
late dismissals bayern had been slow starters in this season's competition, failing to find the net in the first quarter-hour. but they consigned that statistic to history as makaay broke the deadlock inside eleven seconds to leave madrid reeling, a blow from which the spanish side never really recovered. lucio doubled bayern's lead in the second half and although ruud van nistelrooy made it 2-1 with a penalty after mahamadou diarra and mark van bommel had each received second yellow cards, it is bayern who will enter friday's draw.
ominous portent the teams ran out to the haunting theme from the omen, carmina burana, which proved an apt introduction as within seconds of kick-off bayern had levelled the tie. from the whistle the ball was played to roberto carlos but the brazilian's touch was poor, allowing hasan salihamidžić to capitalise. the midfielder quickly threaded a square pass through to makaay who swept the ball past iker casillas, to leave a madrid side hit by the late withdrawal of fabio cannavaro shell-shocked.
bayern danger with fabio capello urging them on from the sidelines, the visitors sought to regroup but their tenacious midfield triumvirate of diarra, emerson and fernando gago struggled to find a balance and bayern could have been three goals to the good by the half-hour. first makaay led a lightning counterattack, freeing lukas podolski but, with covering defender miguel torres desperately trying to make up ground, the 21-year-old failed to get enough purchase on his effort and casillas saved.
guti introduced the goalkeeper was busy again as van bommel unlocked the ragged madrid back line with a simple ball through the middle to makaay, whose shot was deflected wide by casillas. bastian schweinsteiger fired just wide from the resulting corner and it finally forced capello into a change, replacing emerson with guti, a player far more comfortable in possession. how madrid needed it, and the ploy bore dividends as the merengues finished the half on the offensive with guti, raúl gonzález and van nistelrooy all going close.
lucio header capello made another alteration at the interval, introducing antonio cassano, but the second half almost started the same way as the first. dropping into midfield, podolski found van bommel with a perfectly-weighted pass and only a fine stop from casillas denied bayern a second. at the other end kahn had been largely anonymous, and although he had to push one van nistelrooy header wide, it was bayern who looked the more likely scorers. they duly added to their advantage midway through the period when lucio, also a scorer in the first leg, nodded in willy sagnol's corner.
dramatic finale in a hugely eventful climax, there was more drama as diarra and van bommel were dismissed before van nistelrooy gave madrid hope seven minutes from time, slotting in from the spot after lucio had tripped robinho. sergio ramos then had a late effort scrubbed out for handball as bayern held on.
