mustafa winner shocks lyon published: friday 13 december 2002, 0.25cet
lyon 0-1 denizlispor (agg: 0-1) visitors pull off big surprise against french champions.
french champions olympique lyonnais were eliminated from the uefa cup after slumping to a surprise 1-0 home defeat against turkey's denizlispor in the second leg of their third-round tie.
mustafa goal
the sixth-minute strike from mustafa ozkan was the only goal in the 180 minutes of the two-legged tie, but it proved enough to seal denizlispor's place in tomorrow's draw for the last 16. it was, however, a goal fit to win any tie, as mustafa volleyed from close range after connecting with a cross from defender janne hietanen.
heinen saves
lyon, ousted from the uefa champions league in the first group stage, threw everything into the game as they searched for an equaliser but goalkeeper dirk heinen produced numerous dramatic saves to keep the hosts at bay.
juninho break
lyon midfield player juninho pernambucano broke down the right flank in the 17th minute, with three players waiting in the box ready to pounce, but his poor cross was easily cleared. minutes later, vikash dhorasoo raced into the penalty area and unleashed a fierce shot which was somehow cleared off the line by the combined efforts of denizlispor defenders ali tandogan and hakan cimen.
lyon chances
heinen saved a shot from playmaker eric carrière in the 65th minute before diving well to deny captain sonny anderson four minutes later as the hosts continued to push forward. defender claudio caçapa also volleyed wide from inside the box with just six minutes to go, but by that stage lyon looked resigned to their fate. denizlispor therefore move into tomorrow's fourth-round draw while lyon must now concentrate on defending their domestic crown.
