st johnstone 1 fc luzern 1 (agg 2-2: 5-4 on pens) tam scobbie sends saints marching on after another euro glory night
scobbıe completed a perfect set for saints to secure a 5-4 triumph on penalties at mcdiarmid park and make up for last year's europa league spot kick agony against minsk.
they suffered shoot-out agony in the europa league a year ago.
but it was ecstasy last night for st johnstone as they sealed their place in the next round with a dramatic spot-kick victory.
tam scobbie smashed home the winning strike as tommy wright’s men scraped through after 120 minutes of battling at mcdiarmid park.
striker stevie may had given saints the lead with a penalty early on – but marco schneuwly’s equaliser took the second qualifying round tie to extra-time.
when the sides still couldn’t be separated the perth men were faced with a repeat of last season’s euro showdown with fc minsk.
on that occasion, they crashed out after misses from paddy cregg, dave mackay and steven maclean.
but this time they converted all five kicks and hero keeper alan mannus saved from swiss forward schneuwly to set up a tie with slovakian outfit spartak trnava next week.
that sparked an ill-advised pitch invasion at the end, which saw gaffer wright ordering fans to leave the field.
but it was hard to grudge the saints supporters after the heartache they suffered in this tournament 12 months ago.
wright signalled his intent by fielding an attacking line-up. from the 1-1 first-leg draw he made two changes and crucially one of them was the return of striker may.
the frontman missed the match in switzerland with a thigh injury but he was back last night in place of youngster liam caddis.
wright also decided to bring back michael o’halloran on the flank. he was given the nod over lee croft as the perth men looked to go for the kill.
with may and last week’s goal hero steven maclean up top, as well as o’halloran and david wotherspoon out wide, it was clear the home side weren’t going to sit back and play for the 0-0 draw which would have taken them through.
luzern also opted to shuffle their pack and, surprisingly, centre forward schneuwly, who bagged their equaliser in the first leg, was left on the bench.
the visitors knew they needed a goal to give them a grip on the tie and saints’ keeper mannus almost gifted them one on after six minutes.
his botched clearance from frazer wright’s back-pass fell at the feet of adrian winter but mannus’s blushes were saved when the winger fired wide of an empty goal from 30 yards.
winter had an even better chance to break the deadlock moments later when jamir hyka’s trickery on the left led to a terrific cross that took out the entire saints defence.
the luzern star should have knocked it home but he volleyed past the post from close range.
saints were struggling to keep possession early on which meant they were deprived of scoring opportunities.
ın contrast, even though they were forced into an early change after an injury to oliver bozanic, the swiss outfit looked dangerous every time they ventured into the saints half.
wright’s boys needed a break and they got one on 23 minutes when belgian referee jonathan lardot pointed to the spot.
luzern defender xavier hochstrasser pulled and hauled at gary miller’s shirt in the box and it looked a penalty.
may made no mistake as he lashed the ball high past keeper david zibung and put saints in the driving seat.
but they were going to have to work for their place in the next round. hyka forced mannus into a decent stop on 35 minutes and when winter looked to net the rebound, miller produced a last-ditch challenge to deny him.
at the other end chris millar came within a whisker of making it 2-0 when his 20-yard strike flew inches wide of the target.
backed by a vociferous away support, luzern were on the front foot from the restart and hyka stung the palms of mannus again with a long-range drive which forced the northern ırish stopper to beat it clear.
luzern boss carlos bernegger was forced to throw on hitman schneuwly in place of hochstrasser as his team tried to get back in the match.
and the striker didn’t let his manager down as he grabbed a crucial leveller on 61 minutes.
st johnstone lost cheap possession in their own half and allowed their opponents to win a corner.
then, after a game of pinball in the box, wright’s side failed to clear their lines and schneuwly rifled a shot low past mannus into the bottom corner.
ıt was such a poor goal to lose from saints’ point of view and their manager was fuming on the touchline.
schneuwly’s confidence was up and he fired a thunderbolt just past the post shortly after his goal.
winter also had a pop from distance that mannus parried – and suddenly the home side were looking tired and vulnerable at the back.
bernegger was convinced his side should have been awarded a penalty when dave mackay looked to have handled in the box but thankfully for saints, referee lardot waved play on.
wright had to make a change and with 15 minutes left, he introduced croft for o’halloran in the hope the englishman could provide his side with a much-needed spark in attack.
ınstead, the winger picked up a needless yellow card as the match started to get a bit heated with extra-time looming. may had been starved of quality service all night and, aside from the penalty, he had contributed little.
but he was still saints’ best hope of a winner. he fired wide after a brilliant run from deep then on 88 minutes, he almost won it with a left-foot effort that curled just over.
ın extra-time wotherspoon’s bending shot just evaded zibung’s far post and dario lezcano squandered a gilt-edged chance for the swiss side.
then, right at the death, sub liam caddis could have written his name into perth folklore when he got on the end of a croft cross – but from six yards out he crashed his shot against the post.
only a shoot-out would separate them. with maclean, caddis, mackay and may all netting, mannus and scobbie were the saints heroes.
