fc girondins de bordeaux 6-0 škm púchov fc girondins de bordeaux effectively secured their place in the second round of the uefa cup with a comprehensive victory over škm púchov. the french side dominated from start to finish and will take a healthy lead to slovakia for the return leg.
sommeil shines elie baup’s offensive formation was vindicated as bordeaux took the lead after just 23 minutes from an unlikely source, central defender david sommeil. he played a one-two with the excellent pauleta before beating púchov goalkeeper tomáš bernády with a superb finish.
dugarry doubles lead the lead was doubled 12 minutes later with team captain christophe dugarry the marksman. brazilian winger savio, on loan from real madrid cf, was the provider with a coruscating run down the flank which left three defenders in his wake. his precise cross fell perfectly for dugarry and the former french international fired an unstoppable volley to the left of the keeper to put the home team firmly in control.
pauleta pounces dugarry departed at the interval but his replacement, pascal feindouno, continued where his captain had left off as he fired bordeaux’s third goal after 61 minutes with a brilliant shot from 20 metres. the fourth goal came six minutes later, with portuguese international pauleta, criticised for missing chances in bordeaux’s weekend defeat by olympique de marseille, redeeming himself by rifling home a penalty after he had been fouled. bordeaux extended their lead again after 78 minutes with pauleta again involved.
scoring completed as he prepared to pounce from jean-claude darcheville’s centre, pavel vavrik intervened but his attempted interception ended in him deflecting the ball into his own net. darcheville finished the scoring himself one minute from time as he seized on feindouno’s knockdown to shoot home from close range.
baup content bordeaux coach baup was naturally satisfied with the result and the performance. he said: “i was very committed to winning and playing well tonight and i am happy that it all went very well. the team was confident and worked hard collectively. i was very happy that the attack played so well, with all the forwards scoring. i was especially happy to see pauleta scoring again.”
