1 min lazio kick off. chelsea, in their yellow away strip, start with their strongest eleven, but which chelsea will we see tonight?
2 zola and flo are chelsea's front two, who have started quite deep dropping back to receive the ball. veron and simeone have enjoyed early touches and will be looking to run the midfield for the home side.
3 zola gets the first cross in of the evening, from the right, but the ball drifts behind poyet at the far post and out for a goal kick. this is the first serious challenge to chelsea's champions' league ambitions since they performed so well against ac milan in the previous stage. lazio are one of the tournament favourites and sven-goran eriksson's team are a stern test for the london team.
6 an excellent diagonal ball from veron towards nedved on the left of the chelsea box is well cleared for a corner. flo clears for another corner, and veron's delivery is sliced away from goal, as far as nedved on the edge of the area, who strikes a low shot through a crowd of players wide of de goey's left-hand post.
8 ınzaghi is inches away from making contact with mancini's cross-shot and de goey is relieved to gather. a great chance. lazio are running the game in these first few minutes.
10 chelsea have given away a couple of fouls, simply to slow the game down and try and gain a grip on the game. lazio are quicker to the ball and have shown more inventiveness even in these early stages. deschamps in particular looks uncomfortable with the awesome array of talent running towards him.
13 mancini with another through ball to ınzaghi that again just eludes the ıtalian forward. there is an air of desperation about chelsea's defending at the moment.
16 a long ball from deschamps results in a chelsea throw off nesta. the ball finds its way wide right to petrescu, who centres to flo. the norwegian wins the header, but is penalised for pushing. a little encouragement for the away side, though.
17 a chelsea corner. dennis wise delivers and lazio clear well. chelsea regain possession through wise, who delivers to the near post from the right, where desailly heads softly over. chelsea do seem to win their fare share of aerial duels against the home defence.
19 nedved feels that he was obstructed in the chelsea box, but his exhortations go unheeded as chelsea break and flo just narrowly loses out on a race to a square ball with marchegiani. a brighter spell for chelsea as they gain reward from ferrer and petrescu exchanging passes on the right - this appears to be lazio's weaker flank defensively.
24 mancini, from a throw in on the right, uses his acceleration to take the ball to the byline just 15 yards shy of de goey's goal. the pace of the ball takes it out for a goal kick.
25 veron delivers an accurate ball to de goey's left-hand post, which is headed out by a chelsea defender only to be met by a rising strike by simeone, which is sliced and high and misses just about everything.
28 lazio are exposing many flaws in this chelsea defence, particularly on the right, where babayaro is having a torrid time with mancini. he's got salas to look forward to in the second half.
29 flo is presented with a nicely bouncing ball about 25 yards out, which he hits on the volley. the attempt is comfortably wide, but the effort is a tonic for chelsea who have been soaking up pressure for half an hour now.
32 a throw for chelsea on the right, but the cross is a poor one by ferrer, straight down marchegiani's throat.
33 mancini, on the left, is shielded from the ball by ferrer who is looking to let the ball run out for a goal kick. a dropped shoulder and an audacious back heel later the ball is still very much in play and desailly is forced to cover for his colleague's lapse. a fantastic piece of skill that bettered the cynical tactic of shielding to win goal kicks.
37 tight passes exchanged by wise, ferrer, zola and finally ferrer again as a great move unfolds for chelsea on the right. the final shot is weak and easily gathered by the keeper, but again more encouragement for the away side.
38 standing still open-mouthed with your hand in the air is no defence against a team of lazio's quality. veron's header sends ınzaghi through past a flat back four waving at the man with the flag. de goey does everything right and smothers the ıtalian's shot. a corner results and is cleared. de goey takes time out to scream at his teammates, and rightly so. lazio's best chance so far and chelsea are indebted to their keeper.
41 a good long ball from leboeuf seeks out flo on the left, but nesta has done an excellent job shadowing the tall norwegian. flo's frustration gets the better of him and he bundles his marker over. not a bad tempered game this, with skill championing brawn.
43 another corner, another flo clearance, another corner, flo away again. mancini collects wide on the left, and ferrer cannot prevent the delivery. chelsea clear again, but they are literally under siege when lazio attack.
45 a petrescu challenge on nedved results in a freekick 35 yards out in a central-left position. a low shot avoids everyone in the box and exits wide of de goey's right-hand post.
46 half-time.

46 lazio start positively - lombardo wins a corner. leboeuf clears well upfield.
48 leboeuf is taking no chances. that's twice he's cleared into the crowd.
49 good interplay between mancini and salas on the left of the chelsea box, but the coup de grace is absent and de goey collects, distributing early to ferrer, who manages to pick out flo on the left of the lazio box. the tall striker wins the header, which loops over marchegiani and the bar.
51 some drama as a through ball for flo is perfectly weighted but a tussle between couto and the chelsea striker results with couto on the ground, the linesman's flag in the air and vialli off the bench and screaming at the linesman. a lazio free kick results, much to flo's disgust, who would have been clear on goal had his challenge been deemed legal.
54 farcical scenes as vialli is dismissed from the dug-out. the linesman has been sufficiently upset by vialli's outburst that he informs the fourth official, who informs the referee, who tells the chelsea manager to leave his pitchside vantage.
57 a chelsea free kick is driven by zola into the lazio wall. the ball rebounds back into play and poyet manages to get in a clean strike, which sails harmlessly over. a much more even second half.
60 lazio corner cleared as far as veron, who delivers to mancini. the play switches to salas on the left, who does enough to beat desailly. the ball falls to veron in the area, and the argentine scuffs his shot and chelsea are happy to clear.
63 lazio have seemed inspired in these last few moments, using both flanks through mancini and salas, winning yet another corner for veron. his outswinger from the right swings out of play before swinging back in and chelsea can regroup.
66 another corner, from the left so it's a veron inswinger. lombardo gets a touch at the near post, but zola is fouled challenging for the clearance and chelsea catch their breath once more.
68 lazio substitution: boksic for lombardo.
69 a good cross from ferrer on the right from tight on the byline that surprised everyone in the box. for once, lazio are happy to clear upfield. chelsea have defend again, this time from boksic's pace. leboeuf intercepts and another lazio attack breaks down.
71 a tussle at the left corner flag between mancini and ferrer results in a lazio freekick. ferrer tells the referee what he thought about his decision, and the referee shows ferrer the yellow card. the inswinging free kick is a low, rasping effort that could have easily been deflected in, but chelsea survive this one.
73 zola the magician turns two defenders on the right-hand side of the box and then lobs marchegiani from a narrow angle, only for a lazio defender to clear off the line with his goalkeeper stranded. lazio break upfield in numbers and after some quick, sharp passing salas should have done better with a shot from the edge of the box into de goey's arms. great quality and brilliant touches at both ends.

80 desailly and boksic contest the ball on the left, and the frenchman is accidentally hit by the ball in the groin and leaves the field on a stretcher.
82 chelsea are a man short at the back as desailly recuperates off-field. boksic has a clear header from 15 yards, but there's no power in the effort and de goey is untroubled.
83 desailly is back on, but his movement seems restricted. conceicao, only having been on five minutes, is having his left thigh strapped up.
87 veron creates something from nothing as he flicks the ball over the massed chelsea defence on the edge of the box, only for boksic to be flagged offside. after a first half where lazio were rampant, a draw would have been an injustice to the home side, but chelsea's endeavours in this second half mean they deserve at least a point from this match.
89 nedved is moving gingerly too as lazio win a free kick just outside the area. veron strikes it well, but it's well over. three minutes of time to be added on.
91 some panicky defending by the home side allows ferrer to get behind the lazio defence on the right and his cross is well struck, but is equally well caught by a diving marchegiani.
92 lazio break from the roll-out. boksic controls a 50 yard pass on the right of the chelsea area, and turns and shoots in one movement, just over de goey's bar.
