timmy simons and arouna koné scored second-half goals as psv eindhoven defeated galatasaray sk 2-0 to secure one of the two qualifying spots on offer from uefa champions league group c.
anfield decider with neither team having established superiority, the complexion of the game changed in the 38th minute when galatasaray defender stjepan tomas was dismissed for felling jefferson farfán. psv took full advantage after the break, scoring twice without reply to join liverpool fc, 3-0 victors against fc girondins de bordeaux, in the knockout rounds. the teams will fight it out for overall supremacy at anfield on matchday 5, when the turkish and french sides will attempt to gain consolation in the form of a uefa cup berth.
instant action an entertaining match had appeared in prospect from the kick-off as psv immediately threatened twice, but neither phillip cocu nor carlos salcido could find the target when an early goal would have settled home nerves. they were tested again soon after, as sabrı sarıoğlu's fierce shot from range necessitated a full-length stretch by heurelho gomes in the psv goal to prevent it fizzing into the top corner.
afellay involvement ibrahim afellay saw plenty of the ball in the middle of the park and the way he intelligently spread it round belied his 20 years, although he and his fellow psv midfielders took every opportunity to free koné. the ploy almost paid dividends after ten minutes, but the ivory coast striker's low effort from just inside the box was palmed behind for a corner by faryd mondragón.
farfán threatens psv upped the tempo following the straight red card shown to croatian defender tomas. farfán, who had been fouled, took the free-kick himself from 18 metres, his attempt deflecting off the wall and over. then, just before the interval, farfán's low centre eluded everyone including the unmarked koné. psv coach ronald koeman set out to exploit the numerical advantage after half-time, bringing on midfielder jason culina for defender jan kromkamp.
simons pounces the substitute's first meaningful contribution was to claim, in vain, for a penalty on 51 minutes after farfán's back-heel released him in the area, although there was no disputing the opener when it finally arrived eight minutes later. the dutch champions had been pinning galatasaray deeper into their own half when simons stooped to nod in from virtually on the line after cocu's powerful header from farfán's free-kick had been brilliantly parried by mondragón.
koné clincher farfán was now the most influential player on the pitch and six minutes later he broke down the right before curling in a delightful centre which koné somehow headed wide from five metres with mondragón stranded and the goal gaping. the blond-haired african still had time to make his mark, though, and in the 84th minute showed strength to outmuscle junichi imamoto, skill to side-step mondragón and a cool head to drill in the second goal which wrapped up the win and a place in the last 16.
