manchester city fc's david silva attributes his fine form to the influence of roberto mancini, who said he thought the spain forward was "incredible" even four years ago.
in flying form for club and country this season, manchester city fc's versatile attacker david silva paid tribute to manager roberto mancini ahead of the uefa champions league group a match at home to villarreal cf on tuesday.
while city are making their competition debut, silva reached the 2006/07 quarter-finals with valencia cf, having scored in the previous roundto put out mancini's fc internazionale milano. mancini brought silva to manchester last year, and silva, fresh from two goals in spain's 3-1 defeat of scotland, is thriving for the premier league leaders.
"i'm very thankful to the gaffer, he's shown a lot of faith in me ever since i came," said silva. "that faith is very important for a player, even more so as i was changing to a new club, league and country. i'm very happy here both on and off the field and that's thanks to the players, the boss and the coaching staff."
mancini returned the compliment. "silva is one of best players in europe and the world at the moment, he has the ability to play for a team like barcelona or real madrid," the manager said "he's improved as a man and a player over the last two years here. i saw him play for the first time many years ago for valencia versus inter in the champions league. he was very young then but you could see he was an incredible player."
however, even with silva, mancini's side have just one point from their opening two group a fixtures, with their 25-year-old forward aware that only a win will do against villarreal. "it's a very difficult group and we have to get the three points," silva said. "whoever doesn't get the win will lose ground and find it very difficult to qualify."
on the disparity between their domestic and european starts, silva added: "we've only played two matches in the champions league, which were both against top sides, so we probably need more games to show the same consistency. we've played two tough games and, though we've not had too much luck, we've made things hard for ourselves. hopefully we can start turning things around tomorrow."
what is more, having faced villarreal on seven occasions in the liga, silva is well placed to assess the threat posed by a side desperate to bounce back from 2-0 defeats by fc bayern münchen and ssc napoli. "villarreal are a great team," he said.
"they like to keep possession, they've got very fast players up front and are very dangerous on the counter. we'll have to try to keep the ball as much as we can to avoid being caught on the break."
sergio agüero's added-time winner gave city their first uefa champions league victory and leaves the impressive visitors adrift in group a.
manchester city fc's uefa champions league bandwagon is finally rolling after sergio agüero's added-time winner left unlucky villarreal cf empty-handed.
substitute agüero turned in pablo zabaleta's low cross to earn city their first uefa champions league victory having previously endured a frustrating evening. the visitors belied their poor early-season liga form, taking the lead through cani after four minutes and keeping city at bay after carlos marchena's own goal had restored parity just before the break. city's victory takes them on to four points, one behind second-placed ssc napoli in group a second place, and after a third defeat villarreal need a miracle when the teams reconvene at el madrigal on 2 november.
villarreal had scored one goal in nine away games prior to arriving in manchester yet they made a dream start. jonathan de guzmán intercepted a david silva pass some 35 metres from goal and supplied giuseppe rossi for a shot from inside the d of the penalty area that joe hart could only parry, allowing cani to slot home.
after a subdued start, the home supporters sought to rouse their favourites but with limited success. samir nasri volleyed over a cross from aleksandar kolarov after 13 minutes before kolarov himself tested diego lópez with a free-kick.
that pair were two of five changes from city's saturday defeat of aston villa fc but roberto mancini made another change with half-time approaching. shortly after seeing yaya touré rob cristián zapata but screw his shot out for a throw-in, mancini withdrew adam johnson and sent on gareth barry, allowing touré to push higher upfield.
as it was city had a helping hand with their equaliser soon after. silva and nasri combined to send kolarov on an overlapping run and his low centre was turned into his own net by marchena, the defender making a vain attempt to deny džeko, who might have scored a second either side of half-time but on both occasions failed to get the ball past lópez.
kolarov did find the net but was offside yet villarreal were not just sitting back. rossi's speed and ability to find space guarantees a threat and he tested hart with a low strike after 52 minutes. the introduction of agüero gave villarreal something else to worry about although it looked like a defence marshalled impressively by gonzalo rodríguez would hold firm after džeko and zabaleta spurned late chances. instead, deep into added time, agüero finally sank the yellow submarine.
